Implementing the Solo Process Temperature Controller

The SOLO Temperature Controller is a single loop dual output process temperature controller that can control both heating and cooling simultaneously. It is available in 1/32, 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 DIN panel sizes and is UL, CUL and CE approved. The name of temperature controller is deceiving. This unit will also accept voltage and current into them, which is great for process control.

Recently I was asked: How you can change the pressure value from PSI to Bar?

They were bringing into the controller a voltage signal. This can be scaled using the tP-H (High level signal) and tP-L (Low level signal). The units on the display scaled for you. The default is -999 to 999. See section 11-2 of the following information guide that comes with the controller. Continue Reading!

Omron CP1H Table Data Instructions

The Omron CP1H programmable logic controller has several different table data processing instructions. These instructions are used to handle table data, stacks and other ranges of data.
We can define a stack of data. With this data we can then do the following: add new data by pushing onto the stack, use FIFO (First In First Out), use LIFO (Last In First Out), find the current stack size and read, overwrite, insert or delete from the stack.
Dimension record tables are used to define the length of each record and the number of records. We can then write and read these records. This is ideal for data acquisition projects.
Other instructions found in the table data processing instructions include searching, summing and finding minimum and maximum values.
We will be looking at these instructions in the Omron CP1H PLC. Examples of the instructions will be presented. Continue Reading!

Implementing the Omron Host Link Protocol (VB.Net)

Previously we used VB6 (Visual Basic 6) to implement the Omron Host Link Protocol to communicate to our programmable logic controller. (PLC) In part 2 we used Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to accomplish our host link serial communication. We will now look at using VB.Net to establish and retrieve information in and out of the PLC using host link. (C mode commands)

Hostlink communication protocol is a method developed by Omron for communication to PLC’s and other equipment. This ASCII based protocol is used over RS232 or RS422/RS485. It is a many to one implementation which means that you can communicate with up to 32 devices back to a master. (1:N) This communication on the industrial floor can control PLC’s, Temperature Controllers, Panel Meters, etc.

The Omron CP1H plc will be used with a CP1W-CIF11 (RS485) communication serial link adapter. We will also use a USB-485M Universal Serial Bus to RS485 adapter from automation direct. The video at the end of this post will demonstrate the communications by reading 10 registers form the DM area of the PLC. Continue Reading!

Creating a Database in SQL Server Express 2014

Microsoft SQL Server Express 2014 is a free, edition of SQL Server this is ideal for learning and developing desktop, web and small server applications. The database size can be 10 gigabytes in size. SQL Server Express 2014 release includes the full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio. We will be using SQL Server 2014 Management Studio (SSMS) to create a database. The SQL Server database will be created so we can connect to it for data acquisition (data logging) from our PLC applications. Continue Reading!

Omron CP1H System Hardware

The Omron CP1 series of programmable logic controllers consist of three different units. CP1E is the cost effective unit, CP1L is the high performing controller that can come with embedded Ethernet and the CP1H is the position control and comprehensive programmable logic controller.
We will be looking a the CP1H for this series, but a majority of the information can be applied to the CP1E and the CP1L controllers as well.
Let’s start by looking at the CP1H hardware.

The CP1 series is designed with the same basic architecture as the CS and CJ Series. The special I/O units and CPU bus units of the CJ series can then be used. Always use CPM1A expansions units and CPM1A expansion I/O units when expanding the I/O capacity. The following diagram indicates the position of the unit with respect to the CJ and CS series. Installing SQL Server Express 2014

This is a method to read, write and maintain our database. (Tools) We will be installing this SQL Server database so we can connect to it for data acquisition (data logging) from our PLC applications.

Installing the software
The download file can be obtained from the website for SQL Express 2014.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=42299
We will be installing the ExpressAdv 64Bit\SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe on a windows 7 64 bit machine.
This is the latest software that can be installed on the Windows 7 operating system. Continue Reading!

Horner XL4 Data Logging

Data logging is the ability to save and view data from the PLC in a format that we can utilize elsewhere on the network. The Horner APG XL4 has this feature in its design to periodically log registers to removable media. (Micro SD) This data is stored in .CSV (comma separated value) format which is compatible with many computer applications such as Microsoft Excel.
Horner provides one of the easiest methods that I have seen to get data logging. You can log 30 registers in a log group and have 10 separate groups. Each group has its own configurable timer that determines the automatic reading and logging of the variables (registers). The group also has a manual trigger bit that can be set to log the variables.
This all in one controller provides the easiest way to log data. We will look at how to configure and utilize this feature of the PLC. Continue Reading!

Horner XL4 Modbus TCP AdvancedHMI Communication

Advanced HMI is a powerful, adaptable HMI/SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) development package that takes advantage of Visual Studio. There is no coding required and you can simply drag and drop items onto the page. The best thing is that the software is free. We will look at using AdvancedHMI with the Horner APG XL4 Controller. Using the program on the process tank application we created previously, we will be controlling and displaying information to the network. The AdvancedHMI package will communicate Modbus TCP over Ethernet to the PLC. We will be able to start and stop our process tank and monitor the parameters via the AdvancedHMI window. ACC Automation 2016 Review

Acc Automation

We would like to take a few minutes and reflect on the past, current and future of ACC Automation. You have help us succeed in our best year yet.

Starting off we learned how to:
Create a PLC with HMI Training and Learning Environment Free – Utilized the Do-More Designer Software and the AdvancedHMI Software we communicated Modbus TCP to the Do-More simulator. This was all done on one computer without any need for additional hardware. The best thing about this was that the investment was only time learning the packages. Continue Reading!

Horner XL4 HTTP Web Server

The Horner APG XL4 all in one controller through the Ethernet port can set up a HTTP server. This HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) server can be used for distributed and controlled information presented to and from the controller to the network. The server can have security for the information presented. We use HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language) on the server to create this Client / Server communication. Using the program on the process tank application we created previously, we will be controlling and displaying information to the network. A web browser on a computer, tablet, smart tv, or phone can be used to view and control this information in our Horner APG XL4 controller. Continue Reading!
